SFEXTECH has announced that its temperature-sensitive fire prevention sticker, SFEX DETECTOR has been officially adopted by a Korean airline and is now being actively deployed on in-service aircraft.

According to SFEXTECH, the SFEX DETECTOR has been installed on the external surface of overhead bins aboard domestic commercial aircraft operated by T’way Air, marking the first application of this solution in the airline industry. The installation is part of a broader preemptive safety initiative in response to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT)’s new regulatory directive, which will take effect on September 1, 2025, mandating enhanced onboard fire safety measures related to carry-on lithium-ion batteries.

Under the updated guidelines, all domestic carriers are now required to equip aircraft cabins with a minimum of two certified fire containment bags, as well as early detection devices such as thermal-sensitive stickers or fire indicators, capable of identifying abnormal battery heat buildup before combustion occurs. SFEX DETECTOR has been implemented as one of the mandatory detection components in compliance with these new regulations.

SFEX DETECTOR is a thermochromic fire monitoring device in the form of an adhesive sticker, developed using temperature-responsive color-change technology. When affixed to electrical equipment or areas near lithium-ion batteries, the sticker visibly changes color once it reaches a predefined activation threshold—such as 40°C, 50°C, or 60°C—allowing crew members or operators to detect potential thermal anomalies without the need for specialized tools or monitoring systems. Its high visibility and simple installation make it especially well-suited for enclosed environments like aircraft cabins.

In the aviation use case, SFEX DETECTOR is applied to external bin surfaces or surrounding bulkhead panels to enable the rapid visual detection of abnormal battery heat emissions in carry-on luggage. In the event of an incident, cabin crew can immediately identify and respond to fire risk indicators.

SFEXTECH intends to expand its onboard fire detection and suppression product line following the successful airline integration of SFEX DETECTOR. The company is currently supplying other cabin-compatible solutions, including the SFEX TB POUCH, a certified fire containment bag, as well as the SFEX Thermal Barrier, an advanced flame-resistant panel system suitable for transportation and infrastructure applications.

'SFEX DETECTOR' incorporates Thermochromic Microcapsule technology that changes color when a specified temperature is exceeded. This provides real-time, visual thermal monitoring for areas with potential fire hazards such as electrical cabinets, power terminals, or confined enclosures.

Product specifications are as follows:

  • Dimensions: 30 × 50 mm

  • Activation temperatures: 40°C / 50°C / 60°C (selectable)

  • Operation: Thermochromic response (color change)

  • Storage conditions: Room temperature

  • Recommended replacement cycle: 3 years

Looking ahead, SFEXTECH plans to further expand its visual-based fire detection solutions across multiple transport sectors, including aviation, rail, and electric mobility infrastructure. With growing regulatory demands for battery safety and fire risk mitigation, 'SFEX DETECTOR' is positioned as a next-generation detection product that establishes a new standard in fire prevention and early intervention technologies.
